Tattoo aftercare
A fresh tattoo is a wound that needs a few weeks to heal. With the right care it stays beautiful.
These are general guidelines. If I tell you something different after your appointment, follow that.
Step by step
Right after your appointment
Protective film and first wash
Keep the protective film on for as long as I tell you. Then wash the tattoo with freshly washed hands, lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, and pat it dry with a clean towel.
The first days
Keep it clean and moisturise lightly
Wash the tattoo gently and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream several times a day. Less is more, the skin needs to breathe.
The first weeks
Let it peel, do not scratch
The skin will peel and may itch. Do not scratch or pick at scabs. Wear loose clothing that does not rub on the tattoo. The surface usually heals within two to four weeks.
Avoid until healed
- Sun and tanning beds
- Swimming pools, saunas and baths. Showering is fine.
- Scratching and picking at scabs
- Tight clothing that rubs on the tattoo
Keeping it beautiful
Sunscreen with a high SPF keeps lines and colours fresh for longer.
Once it has healed, we check whether anything needs a touch-up. That is included, except on the back of the hand to the fingers and the top of the foot to the toes.
If the tattoo becomes redder after a few days, swells, feels hot or weeps, have it checked by a doctor.
